About this Event
Please join GLOW Women Rise and the YWCA of Genesee County for an anti-racism workshop led by Buffalo, NY writer and diversity trainer Nanette D. Massey. The workshop consists of reading the New York Times bestselling book, Me and White Supremacy: A 28-Day Challenge to Combat Racism, by Layla Saad as a group and then having 4 weekly discussions regarding how the book did or did not impact our thinking about race. Ms. Massey will help us learn, through doing the exercises in the book, how to divest ourselves of white-supremacy and then put into action a plan to help other white people do the same.
What you need for this online workshop:
We will use the video conferencing app, Zoom. Anyone can download the app for free. https://zoom.us/
You will need to obtain (purchase or borrow) your own copy of Me and White Supremacy; the e-book is the least expensive version if you are purchasing. https://www.meandwhitesupremacybook.com/
You can download for free an e-reader app for your phone, tablet or computer. If you need assistance with this, please contact us at email@example.com.
If you would like to borrow a copy and have a library card you can use a free service called Hoopla, https://www.hoopladigital.com/which is paid for by your local library. If you do not have a library card you can get one by calling your local library.
About the book:
Me and White Supremacy: A 28-Day Challenge to Combat Racism, Change the World, and Become a Good Ancestor leads readers through a journey of understanding their white privilege and participation in white supremacy, so that they can stop (often unconsciously) inflicting damage on black, indigenous and people of color, and in turn, help other white people do better, too. The book goes beyond the original workbook by adding more historical and cultural contexts, sharing moving stories and anecdotes, and includes expanded definitions, examples, and further resources.
You can view a clip of one of Ms. Massey’s workshops on the adjoining online event page.
The cost is $15 for the 4 week session. If the cost is prohibitive but you would like to join us, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you have spotty, or NO wifi please let us know and we will see if we can work with others in your area.
